Hospital Pharmacist versus Retail Pharmacist – The Better Career

Hospital PharmacyIs the hospital pharmacist career more lucrative than a retail pharmacist career? This has been a question asked by many aspiring pharmacy technicians and pharmacists since retail pharmacies became a constant across the USA. However there are clear advantages and disadvantages to being one or the other. A hospital pharmacist is based in a pharmacy that is owned and operated by the respective hospital and hence they deal with just more than the regular walk in or call in prescriptions that need to be filled. The hospital pharmacist deals with a wide range of drugs that are similar to those in the retail pharmacy but the prescriptions are from the hospital itself. This means that when a doctor prescribes for an in patient that means that the hospital pharmacist gets that prescription, prepares it and delivers it to the nurses for them to administer to the in patient. This means that depending o0n the hospital the prescriptions can be a lot different. Some hospital pharmacies serve both in patient and out patient prescriptions, so they see and learn a lot more. For certain illnesses the prescription cannot be administered outside of the hospital and as such the hospital pharmacist is required to learn about a wider range of drugs than the retail pharmacist is required to.

The distinct advantages to being a hospital pharmacist are as follows:

Much more stable hours: The hospital pharmacy is open 24 hours a day and as such has a much more organized shift system and this means a more likely fact that a pharmacy technician will have a full 40 hour work week.

Less interaction with the public: Due to the fact that most people don’t fill prescriptions at the hospital pharmacy you have the benefit of less interaction with the general public. This means that you have more free time on your hands on the job.

Greater responsibility and better on your resume: A career in hospital pharmacy allows you the benefit of a stronger resume. Hospital pharmacists are known as the gatekeepers for the drugs that are kept by the hospital. This is a position of responsibility that looks good on a resume.

Better Salary: As a hospital pharmacist the salary range is any where between USD$80,000 per annum and USD$100,000 per annum. This of course depends on hospital size, hours worked and level of responsibility. You can search for a career in hospital pharmacy quite easily on line at any of the major career websites.
