Learn about the side effects of antihistamine interaction with other medication

Before learning about antihistamine interaction, it is better we learn something about what histamines are and what reactions they cause in our body. Substances that cause our body cells to react by getting attached to them are histamines. Reactions can be anything from a running nose, watery eyes, sneezing and even itching in extreme cases. Antihistamines help prevent these substances from causing these reactions in our body.

Antihistamines can also help control nausea and vomiting, which many people experience when they travel. Those suffering from insomnia are advised by physicians to take antihistamines as it causes drowsiness and leads to sleep. Antihistamines are a combination of decongestants and pain relieving medication.

Antihistamines are available as over the counter or OTC prescriptions or through a physician. OTC prescriptions can be used for adults who have no major problems in health, while those who have medical problems need to consult a physician before they use an antihistamine so they don’t experience any side effects. Taking an antihistamine provide instant relief from insect bites that cause itchiness, sneezing and watery eyes.  There are also certain drawbacks when you consume this medication. Antihistamines come with their own side effects.

Medication found in most antihistamines tend to cause drowsiness in people, so if you need to drive or even operate machines of any kind at work then it’s best you stay away from them. Antihistamines make your thoughts fuzzy so clear thinking is lost. With your mouth and eyes going dry, drowsiness sets in making you want to take a short nap. Avoid taking anti histamines along with sleeping pills, muscle relaxants and high blood pressure medication. The side effects become multifold.

If you have consumed alcohol, it’s advisable to avoid antihistamine medication as they can aggravate drowsiness. People who should avoid antihistamines especially OTC medication are those suffering from breathing problems, thyroid diseases, Glaucoma, heart diseases, prostrate gland troubles and  high blood pressure. Newer forms of antihistamines are now available which cause little or no drowsiness. Consult your physician before you decide to take an antihistamine.
