Allergies and Drugs

How A Combination of Allergies And Drugs Can have a postive and negative impact

Many consider allergic reaction as the side effect of powerful medication. It is also called as drug allergy. There are several types of allergic reaction due to drug intake. Reaction to the drug can be mild or powerful. It depends on the immune system of the person consuming the prescription and the drug itself. This is why it is imperative to understand allergies and drug combinations.

Though the drug allergy can affect any part of the body the most common part is the skin. Once the symptoms of drug allergy appear, you need to locate the source of the allergy and should be treated immediately. There are some allergies that can be life threatening if they are left without proper treatment.

You must remember the fact that the drug allergy does not take place the first time when you have medicines. The reaction may appear probably the second time you have the medication.

An allergic reaction is basically caused by the body’s immune system which is over reacting to the drug. This is also called as antigen. The effect of these mediators on organs and other cells trigger the symptoms of this powerful reaction.

The most common sources of allergic reactions are

  • Painkillers
  • Antibiotics
  • Anti-seizure medications

Drug allergens can be treated if adequate notice is given at the initial stages. Allergies and drug combinations can be fatal and the various risk factors for drug allergies are

  • Frequent drug exposure
  • Very large doses of drug
  • Drug given through injection rather than a pill
  • Family history of developing allergies and asthma
  • Allergy to food like eggs, soybeans etc.

This can cause different types of symptoms depending on the drug and the degree of exposure to the drug. Drug allergic reactions may tend to occur after a week or ten days after the drug is consumed. So as soon as you notice any reaction after having medicines you need to consult your physician immediately. However in a preventative manner you should at all times be wary of allergies and drug matters as this can have a very negative impact on you the patient in the short and long term.
